MLB The Show 26's 9th Inning XP Path puts a notable rotation choice within reach well before its boss pack. Smokey Joe Williams' 99 OVR card arrives at 47,500 XP, while the boss pack is at 275,000 XP. That gap makes Williams a useful checkpoint, not an automatic upgrade. If you're tracking roster resources too, keep MLB 26 stubs separate from the XP decision; first decide whether his repertoire solves a need in your rotation.

Use the 47,500 XP reward as a roster checkpoint

A 99 rating can make a card look like an easy choice, but it does not tell you how comfortably you can command his pitches. Compare Williams with your current starters by role and matchup options. If your rotation already covers the same looks, the early reward may be less useful than a lower-rated starter whose pitches you locate more reliably.

Before committing to him in a close game, use a practice session to see which pitches you can place consistently. Pay attention to velocity differences and to whether you have an option you trust when you fall behind in the count. These checks are more useful than judging a pitch only by how effective it looks as a strikeout offering.

Compare his pitch selection with the roles your current starters already cover.
Check velocity differences instead of judging only by his overall rating.
Choose a pitch you can locate when you are behind in the count.
Use a practice session to assess control before relying on him in a close game.

If you cannot locate a dependable pitch under pressure, treat that as a reason to keep testing rather than forcing him into the rotation. The card's value depends on whether its options suit your approach, not just on the XP needed to claim it.

Verify the series requirement before chasing strikeouts

Williams belongs to The Negro Leagues Series, while the 9th Inning launch strikeout mission specifies The Show Classics Series pitchers. Those labels are not interchangeable. If mission progress is part of your reason for using him, confirm the requirement before building a lineup around his starts.

Read the mission's series requirement before choosing a pitcher.
Check Williams' series label on the card rather than assuming eligibility.
Use a pitcher that meets the stated category when the mission is your priority.

This small check can save you from putting innings into a mission lineup that does not meet its stated condition. Williams can still be worth using for rotation depth, but do not count on him for that strikeout objective unless the listed series matches his card.

Make each pitch answer the hitter's last decision

Start by establishing that you can throw a strike. If the hitter takes the first pitch, you have room to change location or speed; if they swing right away, read the timing and contact instead of assuming they will chase everything. A late swing may mean they are still adjusting to a faster pitch, while repeated hard contact can suggest they are sitting on it.

Change both speed and location so the hitter cannot settle into one comfortable area. With two strikes, a hitter who reaches for low pitches may be vulnerable to a controlled offering that finishes below the zone. If they keep taking, a pitch near the edge can create a tougher decision than an obvious ball. The goal is to make the next swing difficult, not simply to throw farther outside.

Pull Williams for a reason, not one hard-hit ball

Watch his stamina, missed locations, and the quality of the opponent's contact together. One hard-hit ball does not automatically mean the matchup is lost. Repeated misses or several well-timed swings are stronger reasons to consider a reliever, especially if the next hitters are seeing his pitches comfortably.

Give Williams several outings before deciding whether he belongs among your regular starters. Compare his command and matchup options with your existing rotation, then judge the results alongside your pitch choices. If a specific gap remains, consider your roster resources, including MLB The Show 26 Stubs, only after setting a clear goal; keep Williams when his repertoire gives you a repeatable plan against the hitters you face.
